The 406 MHz EPIRBs are divided into two categories. Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons, also known as EPIRBs, are small radio transmitters that are connected to a global emergency communications network that helps search and rescue groups to locate you in the event of an emergency. EPIRB's used to transmit on the 121.5 MHz frequency for both satellite triangulation and local search and rescue. Authorities are discontinuing the response to satellite triangulation on this frequency and will only respond to 406MHz signals. The 121.5 MHz frequency will continue to be used for localized (on scene) search and rescue. PLBs are smaller land-based cousins of Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs) used by boaters.

A digital signal is transmitted on 406.025 MHz. After the EPIRB is activated, the next passing satellite will detect the transmitted signal and relay it to an antenna at a ground station, called a LUT. Once the signal is received by the LUT, it is processed for location and sent to a Mission Control Centre (MCC). 2019-03-20 · AIS - EPIRB uses 406MHz for Alert but has much more accurate location detection with GNSS and localised rescue capability with AIS signal. Transport Canada encourages the carriage 406 MHz EPIRB s as a very effective means of sending a distress alert. When activated, the battery operated EPIRB transmits a signal that is recognized as a positive indication of distress by Search and Rescue forces operate at peak efficiency. The EPIRB manufacturer’s instructions will indicate if the EPIRB should be operating afloat or if it can be kept inside the liferaft.
